Bokeh is a photography term, Japanese for blur. The blur forces the eye to focus on the subject.
In cardmaking, Bokeh produces a great background. I love how it can be achieved easily by playing with inks and sponge daubers.
Here’s how:
- Using a sponge dauber, blend and layer about 2-3 colours on white card stock
- Using a sponge dauber, pick a darker ink colour and put dots randomly on your card stock. It’s even more effective if you stamp on and stamp off so that you get a varying shade of the same colour – one dark and one light
- Layer your dots with White Craft Ink or metallic inks for shimmer
- Embellish with a greeting or an image
Refer to the photo above to see how I put bokeh just at the center of the cards by a technique called Masking. You can do the whole card front but I find that masking highlights the technique better when done this way.

This technique is relaxing and fun. It may be addictive too so make sure you stock up on ink and paper supplies.
